We left our DOC site of Boundary Creek near Makarora fairly lateish after sleeping in for a while.

Just outside the town we came upon a family owned cafe and petrol station.  We had home made pies, filled up with diesel and water and admired the big friendly cafe.  The inside was filled with memorabilia from the local region and lots of animal photographs taken by the owner.  The owners were sitting at a table having coffee and cakes and chatted away to us as the local wildlife rangers popped in for teas etc.  It was great to see how the locals do it.  New Zealanders really are friendly folk.

We then drove past Haast and stopped in at the Blue Pools.  Again we had to cross the prerequisite suspension bridge that swayed all over the place, but by now I am getting used to them and even made it shake - yeah baby, the Dr. Evil was coming out!!

We had a look at some massive trout in the stream.  The Blue Pools is where they come to spawn and there were still a few swimming about, big buggers!  The blue pools are very very blue, from the icy glacial waters.

We stopped off at Shipwreck Creek and had a lunch of Tuna salad that we had made the night before.  Shipwreck creek is so named as a steam boat that left Liverpool for Melbourne on it's maiden voyage, came a cropper near Melbourne, but incredibly the hull washed up at Shipwreck Creek off the New Zealand west coast.

The lunch was great except for the ten million miggies that decided to dive bomb us and follow us around.  No matter how many times we jumped around, squashed them in our hands or swore at them, they just kept coming back for more.  So we left and continued the drive towards Franz Josef.

We stopped off here and there to walk in the forests and admire the fantastic scenery, until we eventually reached Fox Glacier.  We pulled in to the picnic area, had coffee and a ginger biscuit and went across the suspension bridge to have a look at the glacier from a distance.

It was not much to look at and we did not feel like doing the walk to see it up close as TOMORROW WE WALK ON THE GLACIER AT FRANZ JOSEF!!!!!!

So we hit the road and pulled into the Rainforest camp site at 4pm and set ourselves up for the night with Steak and veggies.  We went to bed after doing some internet updating, laundry and getting excited for the walk.
