Why is there no decent road or train to one of the most famous tourist attractions in India? That's my question. Suppose it's ok for luxury tourists with their air-suspension coaches, but for us scummy backpackers it's a real pain in the backside (literally - it's bruised!) to get to. It's a five hour bus ride in either direction to the nearest train lines over incredibly bad roads.

Khajuraho is famous for its ancient temples - they're over 1,000 years old. But it's possibly also more famous for the erotic carvings that adorn the walls of the temples.

I arrived at the temples bright and early in the morning to avoid the aforementioned luxury tourists who arrive mid-morning by the coachload. After overcoming my temple fatigue by reminding myself "these things are over 1000 years old" the temples were amazing, and on the whole in very good condition. It was lovely and quiet within the enclosure which meant I could spent 3 or 4 hours just wandering around and taking it all in.

The erotic carvings are really funny - very acrobatic - but the funniest had to be the one I came across of some very dodgy equestrian activity. You'll have to check out the snaps to see what I mean (but not if your company might be funny about ancient erotic carvings - you never know!)

After a great few hours wandering around the temples, I discovered that there wasn't that much more to do in Khajuraho (other than constantly fobbing off the touts and rickshaw-wallahs), so I made plans to travel to Agra by overnight bus.
