Woke early - 4.30 for 5.00 breakfast and pick up at 5.30 for airport for 7.30 flight to Lima. Needn't have bothered, plane delayed 3.5 hours. Which meant we missed connecting flight to Lima and therefore the following connection to Iguassu Falls.

Got to LAN airlines troubleshooting counter. They told us the next best they could do was an overnight stay in Lima (their expense) and a direct flight the next day to Iguassu. During these discussions some guy pushed through to the same counter as us - everyone else from our plane who had also missed connections were waiting patiently in the same line we were in - and DEMANDED (in his American accent) that someone get him a manager, because he and his girlfriend HAD to get to Quito. No, he wasn't angry at the lady at the counter (he shouted to her) he was ANGRY at her STUPID AIRLINE.

He was sent to the supervisor's desk further down the line and while the nice but overworked staff at our counter arranged a hotel and taxi vouchers for us I watched the hothead try to work over the supervisor. He was remonstrating like his life depended on getting to Quito today and not tomorrow, when presumably he would be dead. Tina reminded me, as I shook my head disdainfully at his performance, that he might indeed NEED to be in Quito, maybe for a funeral or wedding etc.

Our taxi came and I was disappointed I wouldn't be able to find out the ending to the Quito couple's story. As usual the 40 minute ride was death defying, reaching speeds that taxis were never meant to attain, weaving in and out of traffic like we were competing in some kind of bitumenised slalom.

The hotel was flash as Michael Jackson, much more respectable than the overnighter at Foz de Iguacu we had booked for AU$80. The rest of our Iguassu Falls experience was set in the beautiful old colonial style Hotel Das Cataratas, which would be the most expensive of any of the hotels we had or would be staying at, but as we were originally arriving there at 2.30am I saw no need to pay the big bucks for an 8 hour sleep.

We didn't paint the town red in Lima, in fact we didn't go beyond the hotel as we were tired from the early start that morning. They gave us a cracking lunch and then we went up to our room to nap and blog.

Post Script: that night at dinner, who did we espy? None other than Mr Gotta-Get-To-Quito. I lit a virtual incense stick in honour to the Karma gods.
