My Dad was transferred from China Lake to the USS Ranger, which was stationed in San Francisco.  We moved to Novato and lived there about six months, where I finished out fourth grade.  A couple of funny events happened while we lived there.

1.  My Uncle Johnny and my cousins, Dianne and John, came out to visit us.  We took a walk and climbed up a mountain (it seemed like a mountain to us as kids, but it was probably just a big hill).  There was a farm on this mountain and my Dad ended up falling in a cow pie.  We all thought that was hilarious.

2.  My brother and I had a plastic ball that we were kicking up in the air.  This was before cable TV, so everyone had antennas.  We were playing a game to see how high we could kick the ball, and every now and again, we would hit the antenna on our roof.  My Mom was watching soap operas and whenever we hit the antenna, it would disturb the signal.  She came out and told us to stop or she was going to take the ball away.  But, of course, we were at that age where we didn't listen.  We continued playing and the ball hit the antenna again.  All of a sudden, my Mom came running out of the house with a very angry look on her face and a steak knife in her hand.  She grabbed the ball and poked a hole in it.  We were scared as crap when it happened, but looking back on it, I think it was one of the funniest things that happened to us as kids.  I can still see the look on my Mom's face.

3.  My brother and I used to like to find ways to hurt each other.  We had radiators in the house so I took a fly swatter with a metal handle, put it in the radiator to heat it up, and burned my brother with it.  Later, to get me back, he pushed me on our electric stove and I got burned on my arm.  I had four lines that mimicked the burner on the stove.  I had those scars for years but they finally went away.  I think he got the better of that event.

4.  My Brother and I seemed to fight a lot at this age.  Once we were doing dishes and got into a fight, about what I don't remember.  We ended up running around the house and through the kitchen.  My parents were at a neighbors house down the street at the time.  After running around a few times, we ran into a pile of Correlle dishes that were on the counter. They fell off and basically exploded.  And we thought Correlle was supposed to be indestructible.  My parents heard the explosion all the way down the street and came running back home.  Our fight ended and we ended up in huge trouble.

Our time in Novato was a pretty eventful six months.  Next stop, San Diego.
