On Saturday Dec 7th, Karen and I drove over to El Centro to meet John and Bertha and then headed to Puerto Penasco, Mexico. We crossed the border at Mexicali and drove about 4 ½ hours to the resort. We stopped in Sonoyta for lunch at a cute Mexican café. Bertha ordered lunch for all of us, a combo plate of different Mexican foods, it was really yummy.

We arrived at the resort around 1700h, this place is in the middle of nowhere. The resort is on the Sea of Cortez, about six miles from the road. The resort has three floors but no elevator which was really hard for John and Bertha. We had adjoining rooms and the main room had a small kitchen.

The wind was blowing and the temperature was only in the 10c range. The beach stretched for miles both ways but it was too windy to walk on the beach unless you wanted to be sand blasted. It stayed like this for the first 3 days. The second day we traveled into the town of Puerto Penasco AKA Rocky Point, about 26 miles from the resort, to do some shopping. It is a quiet town with the typical Mexican tourist things. Karen was able to get a really nice serape. Bertha was able to beat the guy down $10 from what he told Karen. I got a T-shirt. Rocky Point is the shrimp capital of the area and there are vendors everywhere trying to sell you their shrimp. We were able to get the name of a trustworthy vendor and headed into another part of town to buy his shrimp. His shop was just a hole in the wall but he had good shrimp and he cleaned the shrimp for us. We headed for a grocery store to get what we needed for the week to eat.

During the week we played Mexican bingo and blackjack for fun and to win free drinks. There were not a lot of people at the resort this time of year so Karen and I won free drinks each afternoon.

We were able finally to walk on the beach on the fourth day, wow there were shells everywhere of every type. John was like a kid in a candy store, his walker seat was full by the time we left the beach, and oh we had a lot too.

The weather stayed cool so we didn't get into the water but we did lounge on the beach one afternoon. While on the beach, we saw some pilot whales and even a coyote looking for a seafood meal.

In the evenings after supper we played cards with John and Bertha.

Overall the week was fun and relaxing, just what we were looking for.  We headed back to the USA on Saturday and crossed at San Luis. We got back to Yuma around 1800h.
