On Saturday we went to the boomer bash held in the resort. This is a weekly event, with some Saturdays having a special theme. For $4 you get a hamburger, a bag of chips, and unlimited beer. This week there was an entertainer who sang songs and told a few jokes
Saturday evening we played rummoli with five others in a casitas. This is a small home that is built on one of the resort lots. It’s being rented by a couple while their casitas is being built here. We played with nickels, not pennies, and actually came out ahead.
Sunday was another big day: the Grey Cup game with Toronto vs Calgary. It was shown on 2 large projection TVs in the ballroom. There were about a hundred of us watching the game. It was also another opportunity to have a pot luck, so with everyone bringing a dish, there was a lot of food, again. I’m not a football fan so I 'googled’ Canadian football rules and familiarized myself with the basics. Between that and Greg explaining a few things during the game, I was able to follow along. Greg and I, and maybe two other couples, were rooting for Toronto. It was a Calgary crowd for sure. Toronto won the cup so there were only a few of us happy campers in the crowd.
On Monday I did the aqua zumba class in the morning while Greg played shuffleboard. Then in the afternoon I started line dancing class. What a hoot! There are about 20 people in the class and we learned 5 different line dances: electric slide, Charleston, disco, waltz, and one other that I can’t remember the name of
Because of the fantastic weather, Greg and I decided that we’ll stay here until mid January 16th. So, we decided to join the volunteer group in the park, the Poco Locos. It’s a great opportunity to meet more people and become involved with the activities in the park. Our first meeting was on Monday. Greg volunteered to work the beer station at the next burger bash, help setup for Thursday’s dance, and we’ll both be working at the first show: The Texas Tenors.
Tuesday is a quiet day for us around the park so we decided to go to the Peanut Patch. It’s a retail store that brings in raw peanuts from Texas and Califorina, roasts them, then uses them in the products they sell: peanut brittle, peanut butter, fudge, peanut clusters, turtles, etc. We started with a behind the scenes tour, the gentleman explained about growing peanuts, grading them, and roasting them. Peanuts are not grown in Yuma despite the perfect soil and weather conditions because of the presence of a fly that kills the plants.
Tuesday evening we attended our first Poco Loco party
Wednesday was another morning of shuffleboard for Greg, and aqua zumba and line dance class for me. This afternoon we lounged at poolside, my last opportunity to feel the Arizona sunshine for awhile. In the evening we attended the karaoke contest, not as participants but as spectators.
On Thursday Karen left early in the morning to catch a non stop flight from Phoenix to Edmonton. She will be spending 10 days in Cold Lake, meeting Amelia and helping Laura and Will. She packed her suitcase with winter things, necessary for the minus temperatures.
