Midday temp: 18C

Soon after we left our campsite this morning we were in California. The first thing we noticed was the price of gas, more than $4.50/gallon whereas in Oregon it was usually less than $4.00/gallon. It wasn't long before we saw surfers floating in the water waiting to catch a wave. The highway turned inland and through a forested area. We stopped at the State Park Headquarters in Crescent City to get some information and the agent recommended that we unhitch our car and drive the Howland Hill Road loop through the Redwood forest, an area that has never been forested. So we unhitched the Fiesta and off we went. Well, the road was little more than a cow path and lead us in, around, between, through Redwood trees that were huge, tall, and straight as a bean pole. It was quite the experience. We hitched onto Star and continued on. We deviated a little bit off the Pacific Coast Highway and down the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway; another road through the Redwoods. These are massive trees. Besides trees we also saw a herd of Roosevelt elk near the road, just grazing without any attention to the cars and people that were nearby.

Our stop for the night is in a private RV park, our first since we entered Oregon. Very few state parks in California have any amenities, so different than Oregon. Tomorrow we’ll be seeing more giant Redwoods.
