We are ready to travel!

After years of talking about it and saving for it, our dreams have come true. We sold our house and second car, had a couple big yard sales, gave away some things and stored others. We bought a motorhome and rigged up our Ford Fiesta to tow behind it. Greg retired the end of August and September 6, 2012 is our date to start 182 days on the road. Our tentative route includes over 12,000 miles (20,000 km) through Canada and the United States. The only place we have to be at a certain time is New Orleans for Mardi Gras in February. Other than that, we are free birds, or should I say, snowbirds!

Our motorhome is a 2011 Newmar BayStar. It's about 34' long, and with our Fiesta behind it, we are about 45' from stem to stern. We've driven this 'train' from Moncton to Halifax, Halifax to Pictou via Antigonish, and it's last journey was from Pictou to Halifax and back to complete the process of loading it up for our full time RV lifestyle.

We've named our motorhome Star, only appropriate since we feel like stars, sitting up high in our starbridge. Some info:

Length 34'8"    (10.4m)
Width 8'6"     (2.6m)
Height 12'4"     (3.76m)

Water tank   284 L
Grey tank     227 L
Sewer          151 L
Fuel             303 L
Propane       95 L
Water heater  23 L

Some of Star's features:
Three TVs with DVD/radio and surround sound, 2 slideouts, double door fridge, microwave, stove with oven, swivel driver and passenger chairs, privacy doors separating the living and bathroom/bedroom area, loads of storage including a double door closet and a basement (compartments under the floor accessed from the outside), queen size bed. We will be very comfortable, though we plan on living out of Star, not in it!

We should be able to live independantly (called dry camping) for about 4 days. We have a generator and batteries to provide power, propane for cooking and heating, and enough water as long as we have very quick showers. We aren't sure how much dry camping we will be doing, though we have subscribed to Harvest Hosts. It's a group of wineries and farm markets that allow you to park overnight free though the expectation is that you will buy their products. Other campers have told us that casinos are another good place to boondock (free, independant camping). And of course, there are Walmarts, and truck stops. This trip will be an education; we have already picked up some of the lingo!

First leg is across the ferry to PEI. We'll visit our friends Wilfred and Willena.

And away we go....
