After finding out the passport would not be ready until the following Monday and wanting to escape the madness that is Lilongwe, we decided we would head out to Senga Bay the nearest beach resort to Lilongwe.

It is a mostly backpacker style accomodation but there is a smattering of upmarket places. Initially we stayed at Cool Runnings, a rather strange little hostel that enjoyed placing very restrictive signs all around the place - don't do this, don't do that. The final straw for staying only one night there though was when they shut the bar at 9pm! We left our heavily bolted gate and went searching for the beats and bass we could hear coming from a local bar. In Malawi you get bottle stores and bars. Bottle stores containing no furniture, only upturned crates and lots of cheap spirits. This place was very much a bar as it contained a pool table! As it turned out friends of ours from a previous hotel were also staying at Cool Runnings and we tagged along with them to another bar after hearing the sodding coca cola world cup song for about the fourth time.

We moved out of the hostel and went next store to Wamwai, a much more relaxed place run by a South African couple specialising in dive trips on Lake Malawi. I was most interested to learn that the owner is trying to set up a conservation area to protect the lake bottom and its native cichlid fish, which are becoming affected due to overfishing.

Not much more to say on Senga Bay really other than it is a very chilled out and relaxed place. A well needed break.
