We've had a couple of full days with lots of exploring.

On Sunday Ali and Josh came over and we spent a couple of glorious hours snorkelling off Seven Mile Beach in front of the apartment.  It was a hot, clear day and the water was crystal clear so we could see for miles.  We saw lots of amazing fish - shame we don't have an underwater camera. We saw huge fish, colourful ones, heaps of little speedy ones but couldn't find the Barracuda after a swimmer came past freaking out about having been swimming further out by herself when it decided to hang around her!

On Sunday afternoon I played for Desrene's cricket team.  It was my first game of cricket in about 20 years and my body sure felt it!  Happily we won (particularly enjoyable given the number of Australians on the other team!)  It was a fun afternoon although I just don't know how anyone plays competitive sport in that kind of heat.

After cricket, we went down to Spotts Beach to check out the Bat Cave.  Unfortunately we didn't see any bats but we snorkelled until it got dark and saw a HUGE turtle bigger than the size of a car tyre. It was incredible swimming along beside it but he took off when Josh dived down and touched his shell!

Today (Monday) we decided to do a tour of the island.  Following a great 'driving tour' we found on Trip Advisor, we went round the whole island (actually you can't go 'round' it exactly, more like across and back!) and had a great time.  Seven Mile Beach where our apartment is, is pristine beach, calm sea and lots of hotels and condos for tourists.  Driving through other districts and other parts of the island, particularly areas which were worst hit by Hurricane Ivan in 2004 gave us a much better feel for the island as a whole.

Although it is 8 years since the hurricane wrecked havoc on Cayman, you can still see its effects in many places and it made us think a lot about home and wonder what Christchurch will be like 8 years on from the earthquakes.  In the same way no one can really know what it was like to be in the earthquakes unless they experienced them, it is hard for us to appreciate what it must have been like to be here for the hurricane - Cayman literally disappeared off the satellite map when the hurricane stalled directly over it, and the storm surge in particular wiped out large parts of the island entirely.  Des was telling us about one supermarket which was literally washed away and all that was left when people emerged from their homes was the concrete foundation.  Just up the road from their house, a house was picked up and dumped in the middle of the road.  There was no power for 3 months and no water for 2 months.  Again, it reminds us just how powerful Mother Nature can be but also how resilient people can be in the face of such adversity.

Arriving back from our tour, we had high hopes of a better showing from the BC's, but sadly were disappointed once again so left them to battle on and headed for a relaxing swim down at the beach!

It was really hot today - the Cayman Weather channel told us it was 33 deg but with the humidity would have felt more like 44 deg.  We went out for a walk down the beach about 9pm and it was still 30 deg - glorious!

Michael was hoping to skype with his friends at school but unfortunately there were technical problems, so he will hopefully catch up with them next week.

We have had fun going to the supermarkets and looking at all the different products they stock.  We've included a few photos of some of the funnier things.
