The Kalidonia Waterfall

Leaving behind the restaurant and the trout farm I take the concrete path to the left of the restaurant and walk 100 m up to the start of the trail. It is at this point I got confused on my previous trip – something that I never regretted of course. I had taken the wrong way but it was wonderful. Here is the entry.

This time I am sure where I am going and I take it easy. If one picks to walk this trail from Troodos up to the waterfall -and yesterday I came across this path, the path has a high degree of difficulty and goes to category 3. If however chooses the trail from Psilo Dendro then it is much simpler.

You see, for those who don't know, all nature trails are divided into 3 categories according to the degree of difficulty.

Category 1 is an easy trail with gentle gradient. It is suitable for all ages and state of fitness.

Category 2 has a medium degree of difficulty, and it is suitable for adults in generally average to good state of fitness. Sudden changes in gradient (uphill and/or downhill), and/or course along narrow or rough terrain.

Category 3 has high degree of difficulty and it is a route with difficult terrain such as sudden changes in gradient (uphill and/or downhill), course along particularly rough and/or slippery, and/or narrow, and/or steep terrain.  It is suitable for people who are generally in very good state of fitness.

The highest point of the Kalidonia waterfall is 1.600 m and the end of the trail is 2 km from Troodos square.

Of course now in spring there are more people walking the trail. On my way up I come across a lady who is not sure whether to continue climbing or return. We exchange a few words and I assure her that she is on the right way and very soon she will come to the waterfall if she continues. Later on when we reach the fall we take some pictures and exchange our e mails. She is Carol, and we are now friends.  I even urge her to do some sightseeing and not miss a few spots that day. Later on while I am walking in Platres we meet again. She finds me a few metres before entering the hotel’s high arch and she is disappointed she says.  She could not find the right leading signs to go to Kakopetria so she returned to Platres to visit the Chocolate workshop at least, a spot I urged her not to miss.

I am not writing anything else about the waterfall because the pictures can tell more than what I might describe. It was just wonderful and on the way down I delayed a lot because I wanted to sit here and there just to listen to the waters in this beautiful environment.

I pass from Agi’s restaurant at 4.30 pm for lunch and this time I leave Agi pick something nice for me.  It is a Cypriot dish ….a stew actually and if I am not mistaken it is -Afelia.

Back at the hotel and in the outdoor swimming pool swimming happy-go-lucky, for 1.20 minutes with nice Spanish music -actually dancing in the water when I see Mr. Hercules approaching. I let the receptionist know that I was going to the pool and asked for some nice music, so I thought Mr. Hercules came to check if I was all right.  He tells me that he and his brother will be expecting me for dinner at the dining room and we arranged to meet 45 minutes later. I just wanted to complete my 1.30 m of exercising.

So, my beautiful and so interesting day finishes with a gourmet dinner and the company of my two friends who kindly asked me to dine with them in one of the three dining rooms of the hotel.

I have not regretted that I picked this hotel to stay this time, and I long to come back soon.

Such natural beauty . I wish that I had the free time to pack my bag today and arrive in this beautiful place tomorrow .
I love to walk in the hills , whatever country one is in .
For me , true Arcadian , picturesque beauty lies far from the stone and steel canyons of the city . It is found in lakes , on the wild hillsides , deep in the tree filled valleys , anywhere that nature still reigns supreme .
But I do enjoy the pleasures of the city on occasion....
