Kato Drys, Gabriel's Orchard
Trip Start Mar 03, 2010
143Trip End Feb 06, 2011
We leave the monastery from the opposite direction through another gate and we are now driving towards Gabriel's family orchard.
People who come to their traditional house are welcome to visit this orchard and cut fruit.
Gabriel and his wife Eleni are licensed producers of organic nuts and fruit so this is where Gabriel is driving me today.
We cannot get any nuts because it is not the right season, but the orange and lemon trees are full of aromatic fruit
The field is huge, and we cut fruit to take home. Gabriel talks proudly of his produce and he hands me an orange and a lemon to smell the aroma.
I am soon to meet Eleni who is expecting us for lunch. I believe that after this stop here we are heading directly towards the house….but I am not so sure. We might come to another stop and I will know shortly.
We carry the fruit in the car, and I ask Gabriel about the gurgling stream I hear and he is happy to show me the way there. I come to the bank of the stream and I notice a flow of water but the whole place is full of reeds. Of course the water is much more in times of heavy rain. Among some leaves I notice the smallest green frog I have ever seen in my life. It is so tiny and small- 5 times a fly, but I brought it into focus and in the photo it seems big.
As we move towards the car Gabriel tells me that tourists get excited when they come out here
Well….time for us to drive off. We are in the outskirts of Kato Drys, but when we come to a bridge I ask him to stop the car for a photo or two. It is here that he tells me that we have one more stop before going home for lunch.
From a distance I take a photo of the Monastery of Aghios Minas, and also the orchards in the area which are full of orange and tangerine trees. The sky is partly cloudy but it is a warm and pleasant day and I feel happy to be out here in the countryside in Cyprus.
