STEP INTO THE PAST

Cyprus (Kypros) in Greek famous for its copper in antiquity.

Experience here at first hand one of the oldest civilizations of the world going back 10,000 years.

THE CYPRIOT MUSEUM IN NICOSIA ........IS A MUST!

If you open the site you will find every information needed, not only on this Museum in Nicosia, but for every museum on the island
I have been going again and again to the island, and never before had the chance to visit it.  I have seen so many museums in my life, travelling to so many countries, but never before felt like this.- Be sure to have a guid with you, or at least a book explaining what you are expected to see.
This specific Museum is a treasure indeed.  Don't leave the island without visiting it!

Long coveted by foreign powers due to its strategic position at the crossroad between three continents, the island is like a large open-air museum where you can see evidence of its chequered past making it a mosaic of different civilizations and periods.

The cult of Aphrodite, the ancient Greek mythological goddess of love and beauty, flourished here.

Cyprus was the first country the apostles Paul and Barnabas visited in their mission to spread Christianity and the first to come under Christian administration.

Many fine examples of Byzantine art survived here.  Hidden away in the pine forests, are Cyprus painted churches with their colourful frescoes on walls and apses, ten of which have been put on the UNESCO World Heritage List, - one of which I visited yesterday……the Church of Saint Nicolas tis Stegis as it is called in Greek. A 11th century ancient church which every visitor on the Island should visit.
It is just a few miles outsite KAKOPETRIA.
Check the site I give here for full details:

KYKKOS MONASTERY

Kykkos Monastery (Panagia tou Kykkou)

Kykkos Monastery is the largest and most famous monastery in Cyprus. Founded in AD 1100 by the Byzantine emperor Alexios Komnenos, the monastery is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is home to one of the three surviving icons painted by the Apostle Luke. Kykkos Monastery is ornately decorated and covered in a silver gilt, enclosed in a tortoiseshell shrine. It is also famous for its museum, located within the monastery grounds, which houses an impressive collection of icons, woodcarvings and manuscripts, and other Cypriot antiquities. The nearby Troodos Mountains, with magnificent hills and valleys, should also be explored as they are home to nine Byzantine churches, included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, and richly decorated with murals and Byzantine paintings.

The history of the island is , indeed , so very interesting and colourful .
I fell in love with the place from the very start of my first visit .
The locals are so friendly and very helpful , and everyone seems to speak English which is of great help to enjoying a holiday there . In fact the cypriots still drive on the left as we do in Britain .
My lasting impressions of Cyprus were : hot late Summer sun , good and varied food , care-free and easy going folk , and a certain mysterious something that hangs in the air of the island that instils a sense of peace and contentment , and a great calm . I do long to travel to Cyrus again . Protaras in the East of the island is a jewel that constantly sparkles by the crystal clear sea . I think that one fine day I will retire to the island and spend my last days there ; at peace and at ease in the constant sunshine .
