MELISSANI – Drogarati - Aenos

The natural phenomenon of Katavothres, where large quantities of sea water flow into the ground from the area of Fanari at Argostoli and re-appear at the islands Eastern coast, at Karavomilos and the underground lake Melissani, is unique.

A part of the ceiling of the cave of Melissani lake, collapsed creating a unique spectacle when the sun's rays illuminate the 20.000 –year old stalactites on the rocky walls of the cave, and paint the lake waters with vivid colours.

The sightseeing tours in the interior of the lake is done by boat.  The Cave of Drogarati, which has been estimated to be 150 million years old, with rare red stalagmites, stalactites and excellent acoustics, is by far the most impressive cave of all.

The interior has been appropriately arranged so that concerts can be given.

The Cave of Zervati (Blue Cave) is of great interest as well.

Crossing the Valley of Omala, we come to the famous womens abbey of Sait Gerasimos, the island’s protector, with its impressive, seven-island style bell tower at the central entrance of the monastery.

A little furthr rises the proud Mount Aenos, whose highest peak is the Mega Soros (Great Pile) 1,628 m. high and a sublime dense forest with the famous unique dark green fir-tree Abies Cephalonica.  A rare species of wild horses live on Aenos, which has been characterized as a National Park.  The horses offer a magic spectacle when they gallop across its thickly-vegetated slopes.
