Today is the second day of Eid Al Adha Holidays and like everyone else we plan to spend the whole day by a nice seaside resort which is quite popular, swim, eat and have fun. It is 50 minutes drive from Doha located in the southern part of Qatar near the city of Mesaieed.
Join is if you want to see what is there......

I am excited and I plan to get several photos on the way.

I want to see us driving amidst the sand dunes of the Arabian desert that expand out to the sea.

There is heavy traffic again today and I am kind of scared when our son points out the different sites on the way.  Drivers with their huge 4X4 are always in a hurry and they have no respect to those in smaller cars. The dangerous point is at every junction and roundabout especially when the driver wants to turn right.

The drive is not what I expected it to be. Crossing the Nevada Dessert years back was more interesting than this place out here. At least out there, you could see some cactus plants on the way while here you see nothing but sand. We pass through the city of Mesaieed but again there is nothing of interest to make you stop for a picture.

Some trees can faintly be seen in the distance at some point; a kind of oasis in this dessert land and this is where we are heading to. As we drive closer greenery is tangible. Wow! There is an abundance of plants, trees and shrubs.  After all this time of driving with seeing nothing but dessert, I look forward to stepping out of the car and get to the beach. The resort's garden seems idyllic within the first view.

We have to show our passports and pay something like 20 euros each to enter the resort. Members have a discount but the fee is flexible depending on the day and the package one has.

We have a quick stroll in the beautiful gardens for some pictures at first and then we decide to have our lunch first before we get to the beach. It is already 12.30 p.m and the people from the kitchen are busy setting the buffet.  Swimming can surely wait for the afternoon.

I have to admit that we have a warm welcome from the management and Mr. Anshari arranges that we have a small tour around the resort just before our lunch so here we are in one of the resort’s mini motor cars driven through the beautiful gardens. Works are already on and the resort is going to be expanded with new villas and suites by the lagoon shortly.

We have lunch at the Bon bini Restaurant by the lobby. The cuisine here is international and there is a choice of buffet and a la carte menu. Our table is already set and is nicely decorated. The buffet itself looks colorful with a nice presentation with great variety of all kinds of salads, exotic veggies and fruit. These are actually what I like to have more than anything else.

Attracted by the smell of freshly baked bread I leave the others in the lobby taking photos of an eagle and I come to the restaurant to see what the buffet includes today. The aroma of international cuisine of sweet and exotic scents of fruit and veggies is so pleasing that I can’t wait to start tasting everything.  I have a short talk with Mr. Uden the chef who tells me that he wants to be sure that everything is under control because they expect the restaurant to be full today and that he hopes we do enjoy our meal.

A rich variety of dainty morsel delicacies is highlighted on a glass corner stand. All is ready for our meal….are you ready to join us?

We come to the buffet, and I am very picky as always. I want to be sure that everything I put in the plate will be good. I never put more than I can eat and I always return for more if something is exceptional. Of course the next step is to choose the main course from the a la carte menu but just as I am telling the others that personally I want nothing more and the others agree with me, a waiter shows up with a platter of different kinds of roasted meat. What a nice treat and surprise this is when we heard it was coming from the management for us to try!

I can say that meat tastes and smells differently from any European meat and I am more or less a vegetarian but still I try one or two bites just for the experience. Other than the chicken meat, the rest have a strong flavor and a peculiar taste but the locals love it.

Well, the whole afternoon we are by the beach. Yianni and George show no interest in swimming so we leave behind the two men lying on their deck chairs and we jump in the water. It is kind of warm and murky….not the kind of water of my preference but still this is what we have here and there is nothing we can do to have a better one. I am sure that not many people swim in the sea during the summer months. It must be boiling I guess! Probably this is the reason the resort has two pools and an aqua park with water activities.

There are camels and horses available for rides on the beach but the nice picture is instantly spoiled when I notice that one of the horses seems so exhausted and while he is having a ride its toungue is hanging out. It moves so slowly on the sand  that it gives the impression that within seconds it is going to collapse. Luckily the rider is somebody who is not that heavy. The animal seems to be either too thirsty or sick and yet the owner does not seem to care at all.  I wonder if he bothered see the animal at all or the only thing he cares is to get as more money as possible from today’s rides.

The other peculiarity is that the majority of women seem to cool up in the sea or in the pools in their long black dresses or long trousers. I don’t see anyone swimming but what they actually do is hold their kids in their hands or walk with them in the shallow water. Movement with clothes on in the water makes any activity hard to accomplish. Something else about the waters here….I want to mention that the water is so salty in the Arabian Gulf that with not much attempt the body floats above the water.

The sun is so huge and wonderful the moment it sets however no matter how hard I try, it is not possible to get the picture I want. I should have either gone to an upper floor of the hotel or get out in the dessert. Any attempt to take a photo even in the front garden was disappointing as well.

We left late afternoon after some sketches and celebrations at the beach front and reached home an hour later because of heavy traffic. It was an enjoyable outing and I am glad we had the chance to swim. The truth is that we might never have the chance to get to the beach another day even if the sea is quite near where we stay….but I will explain why in another entry
