Dining out the First and Second nights!



When some friends from Athens heard that we are heading to the island of Aegina urged us to dine at "Dromaki" since they knew that we are after homemade meze. The word “dromaki” stands for a narrow alley.



The restaurant happens to be very close to where we stay and we come here the first night. Aliki and Nikolas are the owners and the restaurant is opposite the road as we exit the port upon arrival, by the Heroes Square.



I love socializing a lot with people especially when I am out traveling -many of you who happen to follow my pages already know this, and I am glad Yianni does the same.  When I am out dining if I really love the food I always ask to see the cook and there are times when I do get in the kitchen myself.   (Remember how I put on an apron and cooked our prawns at a friend's Agro hotel last year in Cyprus)? It was at Ambelikos and I have already missed it and my friend also. I will try to include it on my next trip to Cyprus in spring.



We ask for 'pikilia’ - variety of sea food.  When we taste the amazing octopus and taramosalata Yianni gets so enthusiastic and keeps saying again and again that these two dishes are the best he has ever had. So, the result as you might expect is to ask Aliki to join us after finishing with her cooking.   



She sits with us, and Nikola and the waiter undertake everything in the kitchen now.

Aliki was for years in the United States she claims and she is back to Greece and permanently living in Aegina now. Her cuisine is delicious because her cooking secrets were well kept from her Mother who cherished them from the Grand Mother and Aliki adds her own secrets thus creating more gingery dishes.  She is a lady with positive thinking, very approachable with much sense of humour. Honestly, we are so delighted to have her at our table. The conversation becomes more interesting with her around.



Her customers keep coming back and we witness two occasions when some tourists dashed in the restaurant to find her and we noticed the warm hugging and kissing.

Another incident is while we are talking about the octopus recipe when an American tourist seeing her with us approaches our table to congratulate her before leaving. His friends are amazed with her cooking and they book to return for more the following evening.



For those who want to keep away from the jammed touristy area of the harbour where all restaurants are one next to the other with not much space to sit and relax, stretch your feet and enjoy a meal, the location is the best!

During the months of winter the restaurant is still open and there is an extended porch with shutters closing down on all sides creating a cosy atmosphere inside.

 

We loved this place here and we returned the next night as well.

* Of course besides sea food there are many other popular dishes here like staffed mushrooms and beef in beer and many more....

I'd have the octopus, then stuffed mushroms and beef in beer. Do they deliver to Miami?
