Ouzeri "To Akrogiali" Agia Marina -Aegina
Trip Start Sep 25, 2012
13Trip End Ongoing
Probably I would not have liked it if I had come in July or August…but not now!
It is the best coast in Aegina, located on the eastern part of the island and only 30 minutes from the city.
On the way down the very last bend of the road we make one stop for photos and then we get straight towards the beach. The coast is amazingly beautiful with calm waters similar to those of a lake
I decide to take a stroll on the coast while Yianni parks the car…..I always jump out like slug. There is a couple (British) not very far from where I walk and I decide to ask if they have any idea of a nice seafood restaurant in the area.
"I want so much to have some ouzo" I add.
“Akrogialy” then…Ouzo, Pavlos…yes of course! The man replies and instantly points to the direction of the restaurant at the other end of the bay. His wife smiles nodding her head as if to say she agrees with her husband.
I continue walking and I notice that Yianni is already out and waiting for me to return
As I walk towards Yianni some teens ask me if I am a reporter. You see,
I forgot to take off my Press pass I had on when entering the Temple of Aphaia.
I smile, take it off but this incident gives me the opportunity to ask them also the same question.
“You should get to Akrogialli if you want Ouzo and good meze one of them says.
So, I have the clue now and I know exactly where we should be heading to.
No, there won't be any swimming today
The Ouzeri is right on the coast. We find several customers sitting and enjoying their drinks and meze already. Pavlos the owner is absent but we meet Lia his wife who is such a sweet lady who shows up like a fairy figure to take our orders. I tell her not to worry about us because we plan to stay long and we order the first glasses of wine. Ouzo will come later with the food.
The trays of seafood come and go and they smell so nice….so it is not long when we order ours.
We ask 'mezedes for two’ and we are brought the huge plate you see in one of the photos! Everything is always more expensive in the city and I find prices here reasonable
Each meze is great but exceptionally good are the big prawns, the fried cuttlefish (we had no idea what it was until Pantelis the cook told us). You see, everything was so fresh and delicious that I asked to see the cook to congratulate him not only for the nice presentation but the good quality of everything.
How right the people were and how lucky that I have listened to them!
In all we spend more than 3 hours out here by the coast enjoying our mezze with our feet on the sand. What a lovely feeling this is! In the meantime we have become friends with the people here.
Before leaving, Pavlos shows up from the sea on a pedalo with his two little boys. Indeed a nice picture to remember. It is important to see happy faces, positive energy and with the combination of the excellent food I believe “Akrogiali’ has it all.
