Mediterranean cuisine

Well, the philosophy here is natural and healthy nutrition so from the very beginning I loved the idea.

Nothing excites me more than a nutrient breakfast –all local products. What a nice treat!

Talking of local products I refer to fresh eggs, home-made jams, thyme honey, olives, fresh veggies and seasonal fruit. We both loved the mixed omelette. The fresh thick orange juice stands out among other fresh juices. Doughnuts, cakes, pancakes, local desserts and a variety of bread are also to be found on the beautifully decorated bench with little candles here and there creating a serine ambience.

Picky as I am when in comes to food I start my day with a nutrient bowl of cereals and with no consciousness of guilt I cannot resist a small piece of the marvelous milk pie -a recipe coming from the island of Syros.

We only had lunch once at the "Mediterranean" restaurant, but we had dinner on all three nights here which we enjoyed immensely. However, we choose to skip lunch since breakfast is so rich and the whole day we are out at the thermal pools or enjoying different Spa treatments.

Back to the restaurant and the good news is that I am impressed with the traditional cuisine of the chef. He was telling me that the products used here come from the hotel-owned farm and they are all pure products cultivated in organic growth.

The first day I ask for a grilled fish with no oil on top, but I am urged to try it with the pure virgin olive oil of the hotel. It is harvested as I am told from olives in the estate of the hotel.

And finally we come to an even more interesting subject….Wine! I start the word with capital because for me it means a lot.  My closest friends and relatives and those of you who follow my entries have many times read about my love for fine quality wine. I am also very picky with a rich collection I have at home, wines not only from Greece and Cyprus but purchased on different trips we had, -and we have indeed traveled to 36 countries so far many of which we visited several times.

I usually ask the chef or the grand master to recommend a good wine from the list, always giving attention to what the menu includes. This time I am urged to try the “Thermae Sylla” wine so why not!! My dish is grilled salmon with garlic and veggies. I leave the wine for seconds in my mouth to feel it first, and I swallow it and wait to see if I can still feel it in my mouth. It is kind of fruity but leaves a nice flavour and a pleasant aftertaste. Pity that I asked for the small bottle!

Later on when I am asked to comment on the wine I find out that again here the grapes are organically grown and bottled exclusively for the Hotel.

Food is delicious here and each night I try to have a different dish mainly seafood, veggies and salads while Yianni is more on pasta and meat. Prices vary of course depending on the menu but I believe the dishes are reasonably priced.

During the day when I am out talking with other guests of the hotel and we are swimming in the pool I am asked if it pays to stay indoors and dine at the hotel.

I convinced two couples to come at least once and try it instead of going out that night. They never left the premises ever after. I believe that holidays can be spoiled if people have to search daily for other outer probably cheaper alternatives when there is a wide selection of dishes here. So, I don't find it clever to leave the beautiful elegant and classy restaurant of the Thermae Sylla Hotel to dine somewhere else outside the premises.
