PROTARAS from its Foundation!

Protaras is a favorite and very popular resort destination.

Before 1974 it was nothing here. Historically it was known as "Fig Tree Bay". I came here with Yianni on bikes when it was just fields and coasts around the year 1982 with the shyly erection of the first few hotels.

Leaving our 2 children behind with my parents in Larnaca we booked a week's stay at a newly then very popular 5* hotel in Ayia Napa.  I remember well how our friends and parents were telling us about the beautiful coasts in the area that we should not miss.  Ayia Napa was those days a new resort just the 5th in size of what it is today with a gradual development ever since while Protaras did not exist the time we had this ride out there. (I am planning visiting Ayia Napa in spring).

Our day trip had everything. Above all it was a scenic ride to adventure, with much excitement and exercise.  We set off on bikes which we hired that morning after our breakfast, riding next to flowery bitter-orange and balmy lemon trees, musky colorful fields with poppies, daisies and anemones. Land with chamomile, thyme and wild mint. It is a ride we always remember. We needn’t rush it, we had frequent stops next to the fields or by the coast taking photos and having fun. The road was quite narrow when we left behind Ayia Napa, and surely not flat.

The interchanging hills and valleys with pastures made the trip so interesting. The aroma spreading out in the gentle breeze of March varied depending on what we had around us.

I remember when we reached the fig tree bay how amazed we were seeing the stretch of sandy beach and the beauty of this area. There was only one small restaurant with one or two hotels under construction not very far from it, and a big fig tree very near the coast.  It was as if the restaurant was coming out of nowhere, as if it was there just for us who by that time we were so hungry and badly needed something to eat. Nothing else ….just fields! We had fresh fish for lunch and a green salad and I remember clearly that we decided not to have any wine or beer because we had still to reach Paralimni and from there take the main road and get back to Ayia Napa. It was late afternoon when we reached our hotel.

What I have given you here is my little memorable story of years back, and I will stop the entry here post some photos and continue with Protaras and how the resort is nowadays on the following entry.  There are more beautiful pictures in the second part which I urge you not to miss. Protaras might become your next vacation destination.

Your photos bring back such charming memories of my visit to Protaras .
I would recommend it to anyone , young or old .
The prices there can differ greatly from place to place . For example : a small bottle of water in one of the beach side hotels is around two euros . From a shop or a bar it`s between 70 cents to one euro .
But the star of Protaras is not only the eternally shining sun , but the warm hearted , kind Greek Cypriot folk who love to chat and while away the day in friendly talk .

what a lovely looking place Popi very popular can see it is a pity you could not of included some of your original photo's so we could compare how an area goes from a beautiful spot to a vacation location as i call them. I think your tree maybe the Flame tree from south Africa

Yes it is the flame tree and I am going to correct it. I could remember the flame but I wanted to be sure and then write it. In Cyprus the streets are full of these trees! My favourite!

Yes it is as you say it Martin. These kind of beaches are just for a few days, and then you move on to picturesque coves. Such an entry you will see with the coming entry....I am sure you will like it. I plan to go there in summer. Take your snorkel and flippers and come along.
