I LOVE THE CAPITAL OF SKYROS!!!

We come to the capital of Skyros called Chora. I can't wait to walk through its maze of steep and narrow streets where no cars can pass.

Cars can reach as far as the central square, and from this point on, the road leads to the narrow lanes and the capital’s neighbourhoods. Parking is a problem but we are lucky to park our car not very far from the taxi square.

The capital lies on the east side of the narrow waist of Skyros that divides the island to the north and south.

On top of the hill it is the Castle, - a Byzantine fortress with some Venetian trimmings built over an ancient acropolis. Just below the castle it is a very old monastery but it is kept locked after the earthquake. The view from up here is breathtaking!

The Cycladic-style cube houses stacked on top of each other to the summit of the hill give some panoramic views from the round area. In the very centre of the capital and through the main street there are many nice restaurants, café bars, souvenir shops that lead to an open square overlooking the sea.

I come to the other end and the view is fantastic! It is the long beach of Molos and Magazia and it is just 5 steps from here to get to the two Museums of the island.  I am visiting the museums tomorrow!

I want to get lost in these narrow alleys, and every step forward is a new surprise!  I notice that people talk loudly, and I have seen one or two women walking fast, pass me, holding their cell phones and talking so loudly that everyone can hear them.  I am indeed surprised and smile.  Some locals who are sitting outside a café (kafenio) watching me they smile also and move their heads. Without me asking anything, one of them says, "Yes lady, this is happening here daily.  We are so few and we don’t mind others hearing us when we are talking".

I continue walking and stop when I see a very old lady watering her plants.  I greet her and she responds with a smile.

“Can I have a picture of you? I ask, and she replies.

“Why would you want to take a picture of a very old woman my daughter!”

I answere back saying …”why not?”

Right that moment she cuts a red hibiscus flower and hands it to me telling me that she is 95 years old and she wishes me to come to her age and live even longer, and enjoy a healthy life!!

I thank her and move on.

This wish has changed my whole mood today. I am moved by her kind words. While walking and taking photos I keep thinking of her blessing and wish, and I decide to name this lady “Agapi” in Greek it means Love. I keep the hibiscus with me and carry it to the restaurant where we have dinner until the red hibiscus becomes sickly!

Skyrian people are very religious and every some metres I come across a church or a small chapel.  Small gardens, many cats, even horses!

I notice that people still leave their keys hanging on their entrance doors, and in the street I have seen some cars parked with half open windows.

Local girls are very trendy, but what I like more is the fact that the people here feel obligated to protect this picturesque and naturally gifted piece of land. They keep their customs and traditions. The island managed to preserve its history, and culture as well as its inexhaustible natural beauties throughout the centuries.

I am not writing anything else, just sit comfortable and let the (TripWow) of TripAdvisor do the tour for you with slides.  For people who don’t know how to see the photos in slides and with music at the back ground, don’t worry it is so simple.  Just Press Open the little triangle on the left hand side of the map of this entry.

Relax and just watch…..

I am inviting you to come with me and get to know Chora, the capital of this beautiful island.

Come along you will surely enjoy this tour!
