A PLEASANT AWAKENING

We are awoken by the early cock-a-doodle-doos, and the soft breeze coming through the two half open doors with blinds of our room.

The alpine air, and the beautiful smell coming from the huge pine tree in the garden whose branches reach our balcony have already gave us the energy we needed.

I nestle into bed like a child and want to remain there till the sun gets in our room. I get up when the first rays of the sun reach our room, and make myself a cup of coffee.  I get outside and sit at the balcony at the side where there is no sun, to enjoy the scenic view for about half an hour. I can hear the singing of the birds, and the waters gurgling in the river that passes through the village below.

We have already planned the places we are visiting today, but first we have to go downstairs for breakfast.

We are brought sour-dough bread, Austrian butter, and Greek honey, and I ask for a cup of English tea with milk.  It reminds me of my youth when in Cyprus.

We used to drink much tea and milk back then. ….I still do from time to time though!

Our first destination is Aghios Athanasios.

I have heard that it is a scenic village and I don't want to miss it.

It is about 8 – 10 km from Steni  with 400 residents.

I have read that it is one of the villages that have intensely the marks of inhabiting the Neolithic season, and that the Catholic of the village is the Temple of Saint Konstantinos and Eleni that is "trikliti" royal, with two belfries. There are two other smaller churches in the village also.

We reach the village, and I can admit that the drive was pleasant, through pine trees and lush vegetation, we find the church but I am a bit disappointed.

Where are the waters, and everything we were told!!

I get off the car and take a photo of the Church. Two ladies are sitting in the garden of their house just next to the Church and I ask them where the gurgling running waters are. I tell them that I am disappointed and they tell me that I am wrong and that there are gurgling running waters both in the entrance of the village and the exit. They guide us and we are off to find the spot!

OK, the gurgling running waters are what I have in the photos. However we enter a dirt road leading to the orchards of the village which is really beautiful.

We drove through a narrow road for some km and we turned the car to get back to the main road.

It is time for me to walk a bit so I tell Yianni to let me walk all the way to the main road and he follows me behind by the car. - Some exercise after that huge fattening breakfast I had this mornig.  I enjoy the walk, stop every now and then and take photos of some beautiful colourful plants I come across, and also take some photos of the village of Aghios Athanasios from a distance.

See my photos!
