DIRFI Mountain in Evia
Trip Start May 08, 2010

Six o' clock sharp we set off for the mountain of Dirfis.
There is a mountaineering shelter and some years ago we attempted to drive out there. The road was bad then, so I wonder if any improvements have been made since then. I remember we had left the car much lower and walked to the top where the shelter was. It was winter then, and it was not possible for cars to approach it so we had to walk
The shelter is just 8 km from Steni. We come to the crossroad of the shelter and drive for one km but we decide to make a U turn and leave as it is still a dirt road. No improvements made unfortunately! The shelter has rooms for people who wish to stay and also a kitchen. A few metres further there is the ski-run.
In Steni’s forest there are a lot of paths for naturalists, with both easy walking routes, but also more difficult ones that end up in crystal fountain-heads. There are informative signs all over guiding those who love to explore the area.
For days I had been dreaming of pine trees, fir, cherry and walnut trees, goats and wild flowers, lush vegetation, wild flowers and everything I was looking for is out here! I feel blessed and lucky
For a moment we thought of driving to Hiliadou beach which is really popular throughout Greece. It is about 45 minute drive from Steni. We come to the peak of the mountain where we have a panoramic view of the village of Hiliadou and further behind the beautiful coast. The beauty however from up here is such that we decide not to leave the mountains and get down to the coast no matter how beautiful it might be. Besides, I am planning to spend a couple of nights at this beach before the end of this month so we will have plenty of time to enjoy it then.
For the moment I enjoy the lush vegetation and beauty of the mountains. This is what I really need these days, - breath oxygen, something I almost lost while in Kenya.
Late in the afternoon we end our day at a nice restaurant where we enjoy local food.
