Photos from this interesting Monastery of St. George.
Monastery of Saint George (Fonias)
Slaying a monster cannot make Ai Giorgis (St George) a murderer! He simply came from Feneos and his stamp ("Fonias"=murderer) is due to the linguistic corruption of the word “Feneos”, the location of the monastery. Built on a site with breathtaking views, this monastery imposingly commands the lake. It served as the headquarters of “Filiki Eteria” (a secret society formed in 1814 with the aim of working for the Greek Revolution). The members of this society, abbots from different monasteries and Peloponnesian chieftains, headed by Kolokotronis, met at this place to make decisions.
