A TRIP TO THE ISLAND OF MITILINI - (LESVOS)
Trip Start Aug 15, 2003
56Trip End May 01, 2009
I have already done some research over the Internet. I know that it is the 3rd largest Island in Greece behind Crete and Evia. I have been told that we shall be impressed by the old traditional mansions which are well maintained, and are scattered throughout the capital surrounded by beautiful gardens. I also know that from this island comes the famous OUZO of PLOMARI, and I have booked our hotel here. I have also heard that there is a variety of birds and wildflowers, and that there are pine forests throughout the Island. There are medieval castles on the Island, and that MITILINI is used as a main stop in the migration routes for European birds coming from Africa.
Another natural attraction is the petrified forest in the village of ERESOS
FLYING TO MITILINI
The 11th of July.
Today we are flying to the Island, and hopefully the big day is here. We are having some good friends coming along this time, Martina and Taki, and we are all excited. We promised that we shall try to see the whole island (if possible) but at the same time take time to relax and sunbathe.
We get the car we have already hired from the airport and my husband is going to be our driver for all these days. We are all impressed seeing the traditional mansions just as we were told. I want to take as many photos as possible, and have decided to come back to the capital another day and walk through the old city, and visit the different attractions. Today though we have to move on and get to our destination.
PLOMARI at Saint Isidoros beach.
Plomari is about one hour's drive from the airport, but the route is pleasant with much greenery and nice beaches with crystal waters
The hotel is called Vicky, and it is at the beach of Ayios Isidoros - one of the most beautiful beaches on the Island. The reception is on the 4th floor, and we get two of the best rooms in the hotel. The reason is because I have made reservations at least 3 months earlier.
We have a nice panoramic view of PLOMARI, and the beach of Saint Isidoros, - it is as if we are sailing on a cruise ship. In a distance the Island of CHIOS can be seen from the terrace of the Hotel.
TOURING AROUND THE ISLAND
The island is big, and we are making plans for a different destination every day. We are driving for many hours, but stop and enjoy the beautiful crystal beaches as well. The first three days are really exhausting, so we promised ourselves that we should have some rest. The owner of the hotel recommends that we go to a nice small bay near TARTI, which really proves to become our favorite. There is a nice restaurant with traditional cousin and we can enjoy a rich lunch with ouzo and (mezedes) as are called in Greece, and later nice red wine
The word MEZEDES means different traditional dish which accompany the Greek food.
Some of the famous villages besides Plomari are SIGRI, PETRA, THERMI - where the Monastery of Saint Rafael is found-. MANDAMADOS the village with another Monastery - of Archangel Michael. KALLONI is a well known village famous for its fish and shallow crystal waters. MITHIMNA or MOLYVOS is so romantic and picturesque especially when it gets dark. It has a panoramic view from above where the castle is - the 2nd largest castle in the island. MITHIMNA is said to be the (touristic capital of the Island) !!
The beach of VATERA is also distinctive with its 8 km beach suitable for sports, fishing and swimming.
Our trip is soon coming to an end. To be honest the 8 days are not enough on this beautiful island. We are touring all around every single day, having lunch at nice tavernas, enjoying OUZO for a start, followed by wine. Surely I must have put on some weight, but it seems that none of us can stop eating and enjoy the Greek traditional dishes.
Today we are visiting POLICHNITOS known for its hot natural springs
We are flying back tomorrow, but unfortunately we did not have time to visit the village of ERESOS and see the petrified forest. We have to return to the Island again.
Another trip has come to an end. There is another trip coming soon though but in the meantime I have to do some work and give some lessons to my students.
