ISLAND OF SKIATHOS
Trip Start Aug 15, 2003
56Trip End May 01, 2009
I have booked two tickets, for me and my husband 4 months earlier flying with the Aegean. The reason for this trip is that on Saturday the 28th our choir is going to attend a festival taking place in the capital of Skiathos. The rest of the members are coming as a group for just one night, and I am going to meet them on Saturday afternoon when they come to the port. Me and my husband decided to take advantage of this outing, and spend 5 nights on the island, and relax a bit on the crystal turquoise beaches.
Before leaving for the island I did some searching as always, and found many interesting things about the island itself and its beauty which I wish to share with future travelers who plan to visit this Paradise
Well, it is the hometown of Alexandros Papadiamandis, who was a famous Greek writer, born on the 4th of March 1851.
SKIATHOS belongs to the group of SPORADES islands. The other Sporades Islands are
ALONISOS, SKOPELOS AND SKYROS, which are found in the north-western Aegean.
SKIATHOS can also be reached by ferry from VOLOS, and it's only a 2 hours trip.
The Island is covered by a thick pine forest and considered as a protected environment. It is very popular and really very crowded in July and August by people who are attracted by the wonderful long and golden sandy beaches with crystal waters.
It is a well-organised Island and has every facility a tourist might need.
SKIATHOS recently provided the setting of a Hollywood film, the famous MAMMA MIA movie!!!
My impressions were the best
We rented a car for all 5 nights, and had a tour round the Island, spotted nice beaches and it was real fun. Now some more info about the island....
Well, the Island has only one settlement, SKIATHOS TOWN, which is the port and the Capital of the Island. The heavy touristy atmosphere creates a scene a bit artificial, but yet does not take away the beauty of the island.
A tourist can find hidden valleys and picturesque walks, a few quieter beaches, caves, sculpting rocks and small coves. These are the many jewels one can find on this beautiful Island, if he takes the time to explore it.
As far as the beaches are concerned, there are many to choose from, but the most popular is the beach called KOUKOUNARIES which is about 10 klm from the capital with extremely fine sand and with fragrant pine tree forest.
The other one I liked was KOLIOS beach about 7 klm from the Capital
Our friends from the choir reached the Island early on Saturday morning, but there was not much time to see the island and have fun, because late in the afternoon we had to get together and perform. After the Music Festival, we had dinner at a very nice restaurant down the Port till very late that evening.
The mayor of the Island organized a tour for the Choir Members.
They had the chance to see around and visit some of the most interesting spots, before sailing back again that night. I did not want to follow, and instead decided to spend that last day by the beach, sunbathing and lazing around the whole day. Our plane was leaving late at night so we had the opportunity to enjoy a full day. We arranged with the owner of the Hotel Apartment to keep the room without paying any extras till the moment we leave.
We left with the best memories, promising to visit SKOPELOS next time which is considered to be another PARADISE ISLAND !!!
