Trekking in the Gorge of Demosari

It's another great day today, and we leave early to meet the coach which will take us up to mount Ohi.
This time I am with my son who loves nature as well.

We meet the rest of the people. We are about 53 in all.
This day trip to Dimosari Gorge is planned and organized by the Mountaineering Club Association of Chalkida.

Well, all of us are excited, and dreaming of this walk through the famous gorge.

Mount Dirfys is in central Evia, and it is the highest mountain (1.743m.) and very close to the sea.
It is about 35 km from Chalkida, which is the capital of Evia. It is covered with thick forests of fir-trees, while its slopes are wooded by "aesthetic" forests of chestnuts.

We reach the top spot where we descend the bus, and we are told that we shall meet the bus at the end of the trip when we pass the gorge and get down to the sea.

At the beginning the path is rather steep and rough but 60 minutes later it enters the gorge of Demosari. The gorge, which took its name from the homonymous river, is 9 km long and it takes some 4 hours to cross it before arriving on the beach of the village KALLIANOI. The trek is superb as we descend down a 10km valley, rich in chestnut, walnut and pine trees.

The path follows the river-bed and a large part of it is stone-clad. This ancient cobbled path was used to connect the north and the south coasts of Ochi Mountain.

It is said that the eco-tourists who are keen of bird watching have discovered a unique bird paradise since the area here has recorded 210 species of birds. We are told that 70 of these nesting locally.

We make a few stops to rest and have some water. We carry light snacks with us as well.
As we get near the end of the trip the walk gets more interesting because we meet the river below. Crystal clear waters, and suddenly we see a woman bathing, enjoying her bath in the cold crystal waters. I remember that I wished I were in her shoes!!! However it was impossible to leave the others and get in the water. I could feel that sense of cold water when you are tired and desperately want to fresh up. In some places the water is deep!!

The walk is reaching to its end, and we wish it would be more!!! However we are really hot from all this walking and we are pleased when we see the blue sea of the Aegean right in front of us!!!
We are finally here, to the beach of KALLIANOU.
We put on our swimming suits and we run in the crystal clear waters. The feeling is great, the waters really refreshing!!! What more do we need but a rich lunch......which we have when all people meet.
Myself and a couple of others reached first. We had to wait for all people to descend for more than 45 minutes.

An unforgettable experience. Promised myself to come to Demosari Gorge very soon and bring along friends this time as well.
