DRIVING TOWARDS ALEXANDRIA THIS MORNING.

This is another day, and today we are visiting Alexandria.
It is impressive when you reach the Gates of Alexandria, we see Greek written on the walls of the Gates. It is the 2nd largest city in Egypt known as the "Pearl of the Mediterranean" The atmosphere is more Mediterranean than Middle Eastern. Its ambience and culture heritage distance it from the rest of the country although it is actually just 225 km from Cairo. Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, and its status as a beacon of culture symbolized by Pharos, the legendary lighthouse - one of the seven wonders of the world.

We come to the New Bibliotheca which is a huge Library that can hold millions of books and we are impressed because many young people come here either to study, or to search the Internet. Hundreds of computers are found in here.
It is dedicated to recapture the spirit of openness and scholarship of the original Bibliotheca of Alexandria.
It contains an Internet Archive, 6 specialized libraries, an Exploratorium for children's exposure to Science, 7 Academic research centers, 4 Art galleries, a Conference centre a Planetarium, and much more facilities.
It is just great, and we are all impressed!

We then visit the centre and go to the house of the Greek journalist and poet Alexandros Kavafis who is considered to be one of the finest European and modern Greek poets. His poetry is taught across Universities around the word. He was born in 1863 and died in 1933.

We make a stop to a restaurant which is next to the beach. There are hundreds of people in the sea....but they are not wearing swimming suits!! They are in the water with their clothes on, ....a mixture of colors, laughter, children screaming, music, and everybody trying to enjoy the beautiful day on the shore.
