On Friday, Anita's friend Jacquelina loaned us her car to use for all the items we needed to accomplish before Saturday. Saturday would be the last ritual for her father's soul. Her church believes that 40 days after you die the soul floats around here on earth. The on the 40th day it enters up into heaven. On this day, everyone gathers around the grave and the priest performs the ritual asking God to accept the soul.
For this ceremony we needed coffee, red wine, cognac, special bread, cooked buckwheat, candles, incense, and other things I cannot remember. So on the day before we were all over the place getting the things needed as well as cooking extra for guests that would come after the ceremony
We got everything done and managed to have enough time to drive up to the monument of Filipovic. He died for his communist beliefs and is thus considered a hero to older generations. In the newer nationalistic era of Serbia, their love for this man is not so strong, but the monument is now a piece of Valjevo's history and thus it remains as a cultural landmark, rather than a patriotic one. The statue itself is humongous. I mean really large. I took some pix next to it, to give some perspective.
We stopped and had some coffee and made friends with the dogs (did I mention how many strays there are? Everywhere are dogs chasing cars, begging for food, barking at dogs with owners or sleeping in the shade.) and took pictures of Valjevo as seen by birds.
