December 1993 - August 1999

Ah, yes ... back to New York!  It was nice to be back in my homestate, even though I was about three hours, driving distance, from my home.  The only bad thing about this part of my life's journey, was that I wasn't ready for the cold again.  After living in California, Arizona, etc ... heading back to the snow, ice and wind, was not something I had in mind!

Watertown, NY lies just to the east of Lake Ontario.  It is an hour north of Syracuse and about 30 minutes south of the Canadian border, with the town of Kingston, Ont., just on the other side!  I will say this, it's definitely beautiful country up in those parts ... seriously.  But unless you're the hunting and fishing type ... there's not much else to do.  And in case you haven't caught on just yet ... the snow and cold up there were miserable, simply stated.  Growing up in Buffalo was one thing ... I swear, Watertown was 10 times worse!

Despite the severe temperatures and weather, this assignment for me, turned out to be my most enjoyable in the Army.  This was where I really learned my job.  The group of men and women that I worked with, were some of the very best in this career field.  On top of that, it was from Fort Drum, NY that I first was able to travel to different parts of the world and do my job for real!  I'll elaborate on those trips in some blog posts to follow, but I ended up going to Central America, The Caribbean, and Europe.

In some respects, New York was good for me.  I was able to do my job and stay in touch with both my family and friends.  I could literally leave work on a Friday evening and be home in a few hours.  I could always find a place to stay and hang my hat ... party a little, visit my parents, etc ... and then leave on Sunday, with plenty of time to get back to work on Monday!  It was a perfect little set up, to be completely honest with you.  I think that's what helped me stay sane for the most part.

After about 6 years (or 7 winters, as they say there) ... Uncle Same decided that it was time to move me yet again.  It was now time to head to the desert.  And when I say desert, I don't mean the Middle East.  I mean Arizona ... yes, Arizona ... again!!!  But before I arrived back in Arizona, my family and I made a "short" trip across the northern plains of the U.S.  What a cool trip that was ...

Very nice!
Glad you had a nice time in the frozen north! I grew up on the other side of Buffalo (in Niagara Falls, Canada), so it's cool to read about someone else who grew up there too.
