(C) We had to stop. It's the top of Europe and the longest tunnel, right? Plus, Sara LOVES tunnels - especially when they're 15 kilometers... After getting her in the mood with the story about the butter truck incident when hundreds of people died due to a butter truck fire in the tunnel several years ago - she was primed and ready for anything. Who knew they had taken all the fun out of it with minimum distances, maximum speeds, video cameras and everything else. PLUS, they added all these little green safe rooms along the way. In Sara's words - "in case of fire, run quickly to your little green chamber of death where you will be baked alive."
The top of the Aiguille du Midi is beyond words, and except for the busloads of asians in the tram with you, it seems so remote, alone and quiet. The view of Mont Blanc is inspiring and the regular sounds of avalanches running down it, eerie. Why are all these people walking around on the very tips of these rocks, though?
And about the fondue - who doesn't like a pot of melted cheese, bread and sausage for several nights in a row?
