About the dogs of southern South America.  Lots of benign canines abound on the streets of Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Colonia, Ushaia, Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales and everywhere else we have been.  The line between strays and house dogs is blurred.  It seems that it is common to let one's hound run loose, sometimes without collar.  For some owners it may be an easy way to avoid walking the dogs themselves and scooping up (as if that would happen anyway).  We have had no run-ins with unfriendlies, but there have been times when L was uncomfortable.  However, by our reckoning thus far these dogs are simply after a quick meal begging tableside at sidewalk cafes and digging through rubbish bins.

We have had wonderful hikes in Torres del Paine (see I's blog) and now are planning forward into the rest of our travels.  Earthquake related, e-mail responses that we requested from our embassy in Santiago have been sympathetic, but scarce in detail.  Alternately, the Chilean Interior Ministry's website lists daily aftershock reports yet the Chilean tourism website shows nothing actually, up-to-date useful.  Chileans we have met downplay the earthquake problems overall as minor.  We will plan with cautious optimism.
