Canberra, ACT, Australia: After an 8 hour flight from Singapore on Qantas I arrived in Sydney at 0800 on 21 September. Process through immigration and customs was trouble free. I then took a shuttle bus to the domestic terminal.  My onward flight was not until 1125 but I took a seat on a 1025 flight on an old-fashioned Dash 8 propeller-driven plane arriving at 1120.  Canberra has a modern, spacious and efficient airport but remains one of the few capital cities without an international airport.  However, the airport is big enough to take international flights and some international charter flights already use it. My brother-in-law Steve met me along with his wife Anne.  It is great to be back in Australia, my sixth visit, but my first visit since 1991. I think it is the light that appeals to me here it's so pure and constant.  Add to this trees, grass, flowers, fresh air, and wide open spaces. The absence of traffic and people makes every day seem like Sunday. The "rush hour" between 0800-0900 sometimes causes hold-ups of 30 seconds!   Steve and Anne live on an amazing 25 acre property known as the "The Farm" in the centre of Canberra and adjacent to the Governor General's residence on Lady Denman Drive. This is like owning a part of St. Jame's Park next to Buckingham Palace. Anne's passion is horses and she has several.  Steve's passion is working 7 days a week and has 3 pubs in Canberra.  "Pub" is not a fair description as each has a good restaurant and wine shop. The farm is also home to chickens, ducks, fresh-water crayfish "Yabbis", cockatoos, owls and lots of other native birds including the odd snake and water dragon.

My days were spent roaming the farm for exercise and cycling around Canberra in the warm sunshine. My big challenge is maintaining my alcohol-free diet but after a week I continued to lose weight and am down another kilo making it 6 in 8 weeks.  In spite of this hospitality is very generous and regular with steaks, curries, roast dinners. Hopefully attached are images of The Farm.

Best wishes,

Gordon
