We arrived in Bariloche a little bit tired after a very busy few weeks of trekking, horse riding and rafting and deciding that we would take things a little easy.

This was aided by finding the nicest hostel we have stayed at in South America so far. It was on the top floor of a truly ugly building but had really friendly staff, a massive kitchen with industrial ovens and a common room and balcony with views out over the lake and, best of all, a toilet right by a window with the best views of all... good times.

So, we spent a very nice day chilling out in the hostel, riding the chairlift (not walking) to the top of a hill with views over the area where we had an empanada lunch with a cheeky glass or two of red wine and then met up with Sarah 1 again and some others for an awesome Argentinean steak dinner followed by 2-for-1 cocktails.

The next day we decided that we were once again ready for a bit of exercise and decided to do a day hike up to Refugio Frey in the mountains behind Bariloche. Sarah visited the hut in the winter of 2003 when getting there involved hiking through feet of snow; this time was a bit different as we had a lovely day for the hike up to the hut with no snow or ice on the ground. That is until we got to the top when clouds appeared out of nowhere and treated us to some wind, rain, hail and snow. As in 2003, however, there was a friendly gentlemen in the hut cooking pasta for which we decided to discard our hastily purchased crappy sandwich before setting off back down the mountain for a last steak with some of the guys from the hostel before we headed on northwards
