Having made it through southern Thailand with no bigger problems than very stiff legs from being folded into tiny seats on the minibus, we arrived into Malaysia for a night in Kota Bahru and the hottest food we've eaten yet before heading on the next morning to the Perhentian islands off the east coast. Here, for a grand total of 6 we rented a little en suite hut right on the beach and spent the first day enjoying the unseasonal sunshine on what we reckon is the best beach we’ve been to yet.

Our cabin was less idyllic at 2am the first night when we woke up to a massive rainstorm to find the roof leaking in several places, including into our bags and onto Gordon’s toes.  The rain had worn off by the morning though and we spend another idyllic couple of days beaching and body-boarding before deciding that we’d had enough lazing on beaches and wanted a change of pace so booked a boat back to the mainland with the intention of heading on to Penang.

Mother Nature had other ideas however and when we got up to catch our boat we walked out of our dripping hut into a raging downpour to be told there are no boats running as it just isn’t safe.  That was two days ago and we’re still here.  Apparently it can take up to a week for the weather to clear enough to get boats through!  We’re just hoping for some better weather now as if it’s a week we’ll all be totally sick of card games and there’s a real danger the cafe will have run out of banana pancakes.
