Note to Self!!!..........never get a bus from Vilnius to Gdansk ever ever again!

Arrived in Gdansk tired and emotional, but nevertheless excited about our first stop in Poland.  During our bus trip we met an American hitchhiker girl who was couch surfing her way around the Baltics (crazy).  We then proceeded to walk for miles in the scorching sunshine trying to speak Glaswegian to the locals to find our hostel which it turned out was very easy to find.

It would be said that we were pleasantly surprised by Gdansk.  It is an medieval town with the Old Town based around the harbourside/river with pirate ships and tourists galore.  We walked the beaten tourist trail snapping as we went and then stopped for some food and refreshments.

After the exertions of the last week, we spent a bit extra and got ourselves a private room with en-suite (???) (still under the 20 pound mark however).  Settled down for the night and caught up on the sleep we missed on the bus journey from hell.

Friday - 25/07/08

Got up earlyish and wandered the old town, this time climbing the Old Town Hall Tower which had cracking panoramic views of the whole city.  Visited the cathedral which was not as impressive as the exterior would suggest.  By this point our suspicions of something big going on in the city were confirmed as stalls and food points / amusements etc were popping up in and on every street.

Having looked at the map, we thought that there were good camping sites on the beach relatively close, so we decided we would be adventurous and camp there.  We got the tram out to the beach which was full of locals soaking up the sunshine.  As only we could do, we went on a lovely trek with bags in tow, up the beach and through a forest trying to find these campsites.  Alas, we did not find the campsites we had dreamed of, only very very local orientated ones (turns out the ones we wanted were miles away), so we cut our loses and headed back to last nights hostel.

Today is the first day that our train passes kick in. Yaaaaassss!!!    So we have booked ourselves on the overnight sleeper train to Krakow. Putting in the time writing blogs before the train departs at 19:26.

(Gary) i have decide to buy another memory card for my camera instead up uploading to this as it takes ages and there's far to many photos, so will put them on here when i get home. So you will just need to wait for the slide show to end all slide shows next month!
