Our next stop was the oldest city in the New World St. Augustine. Founded by the Spanish in 1565 tourists flock for a stroll on the ancient streets, the horse-drawn carriages and the main site the National Historic Landmark District.

The highlight of our stop was the Castillo de San Marcos. In 1513 Spain claimed Florida through expedition of Ponce de Leon, but the French gathered the first foothold establishing Fort Caroline on the St. Johns River in 1564. Spain's King Philip II, saw this is a direct threat and therefore determined to established settlements in Florida. In 1672 October 2 the ground breaking ceremony established the beginnings of the Fort.

In 1763 the Peace of Paris gives Florida to Great Britain for exchange of Cuba and the Fort is turned over to British hands. In 1821 Spain cedes Florida to the United States and the Fort is renamed Fort Marion.
