This is the city where De Beers began; Cecil John Rhodes and Ernest Oppenheimer made their fortunes. It has been a century now, and yet the city is still synonymous with diamonds and mining.
We stopped to see who they call "The Big Hole", which is the largest manually dug hole in the world! It is 2,400 feet deep (water now fills it to about 400 feet or so). Diamond mining stopped here in 1914, but not before 14.5 million carats of diamonds was carted away! I took some pictures within the museum and find a chart which dated what is consider to be the "most famous" advertising campaign in history, 1947-"A Diamond is Forever". It has now made De Beers a very rich company.
