Preparations for a vacation maybe different than preparing for a journey.  This sojourn is different than a vacation for us.  It began more than six months ago as an idea. Then after much discussion about possibilities and logistics the research began.  We decided to devote several hours twice a week to the task of learning as much as possible about China, her history, language and culture.  Of course, in the process learned quite a bit about ourselves.

On issue (among many) we've dealt with in the past has been the notion of exactly what is needed on a journey.  There are many articles and books devoted to this question.  We were reminded of a quote from Alexander Solzhenitzyn (Russian novelist, historian and Nobel prize winner):
"Own only what you can always carry with you...
know languages, know countries, know people.
Let your memory be your travel bag."

What to do?  What to do?  Some of us (to distraction) make the simplest things quite complicated.  This is one of them.  Beginn-ing with the last word of the quote "bag."   If we were going to pack 20 or less lbs. we would need a special bag as a carry on (and off and around China/Tibet).  Thus began the quest for the special bag.  Websites like one bag dot com. were very helpful as well as Esther's list (OBOW).  The bags were found and packed.

But in the process forgot "Let your memory be your travel bag" which takes a lot more than doing (finding a bag), perhaps just being in the moment.

Oh, forgot to mention...left for Atlanta from Mobile without a hitch.
