Just a short one tonight because I'm tired and leaving at 8am tomorrow.  Yesterday I was up before daylight to go bear watching. The coast is beautiful as the sun comes up and the water was almos as smooth as glass.  We went bear watching in a sort of covered zodiac which goes quite fast but can head into fairly shallow water.

I saw two black bears along the shore; they turn over rocks looking for mussels and clams to eat.  At this time of year the bears are all trying to fatten themselves up for winter any way they can.  The two we saw looked pretty fat especially compared to the black bear I saw in Bella Coola.  But the climate is milder on Vancouver Island so the bears have an easier time and I don't think they actually hibernate here the way they do on the mainland.

We also saw harbour seals which were pretty cute and some harbour porpoises.  The whole trip was a lot of fun but I have to say I was freezing and I had plenty of clothes on (even remembered my beanie).  Don't know how I'm going to cope with the tundra.

Today I was hoping to do a cultural trip with the local First Nations tribes but unfortunately there were none going out.  The only drawback to travelling alone is that often tours need a minimum of two people to run - that probably doesn't matter much in the height of the summer season but at this time of year in little places like to Tofino sometimes there's no-one else wanting to do a tour.  The upside of course is that there are not so many people around.  I can't imagine what this place would be like in July/August when thousands of people come through here.

Anyway, I went for a walk around Tofino and found this little beach with hardly anyone on it.  It's not really swimming weather but the beach was very pretty and the boardwalk through the forest to get to it was great too.  The only thing was that I kept looking for bears everywhere cause they are in the area and I've been reading all these bear books since I got here so I've kind of spooked myself.

Jen, tell Robert welcome back and I hope everything is going ok with all of my readers.  I'm going to Victoria tomorrow (22 September) and will be there until 26 September.
