1/17/11

I keep feeling like a mouse of sorts. It has recently become a habit of mine to go and sneak some cheese along with a drink from my madam's fridge for a midnight snack.  I’m sure even if she knew she wouldn’t mind, but I’m not going to wake her up to ask her.  Plus its safer to just avoid asking in the first place.  Regardless I feel like a mouse at the moment.

Today was a particularly low day out of any low day I’ve had in Europe.  It was our first day of classes for the second semester.  Not our actual classes but a special intensive refresher course hastily thrown together by Guy Allain our program director, who believes it necessary before our actual classes start.  The result was the most boring and useless day of class ever.  2 hours of some professor blithering about the differences between the French and American university systems.  He spoke so fast most of the beginner students couldn’t follow him, making it a complete waste of their time, and since I had already learned most of this information simply by living here and talking with some of my French friends who are studying here and asking them questions and comparing our two systems with each other, the whole day seemed like a complete waste of time.  Especially when these two hours were followed by an additional 3 hours of rehashing what we had just heard with a different professor in smaller groups.  She introduced no new information, but instead talked to us about how to make an outline.  I would be very disappointed (and yet impressed somehow) with myself if I had made it this far in life and in school without knowing how to make an outline.  I was thoroughly disgusted with how useless today was.  But tomorrow’s topic is supposed to be French art.  Hopefully it will turn out to be more interesting and enlightening.

I must admit that at least part of my frustration and resulting grumpiness about this is likely due to a lack of sleep.  For some reason I was unable to fall asleep last night and then inexplicably awoke at 6:00am.  Those of you who know me know that I am not a morning person and never wake up voluntarily before 11:00 if I can avoid it.  With all luck I will be able to fall asleep in a timely manner and stay asleep for an appropriate period of time.

I’m attaching a picture of my notes.  This was the most productive thing I accomplished during class today.  Enjoy.
