We were in a ditch on the outskirts of Tatabanya, a border mining community (something about 60-70 thousand population) near the northern border of Hungary. It was pitch-dark, well passed 10:30 p.m., a summer drizzle had begun to drive worst thoughts in our heads when a beam of lights went over us. I barely had the time to lift up the hand, but the car continued. Then I have seen the rear stop lights burst red: it was stopping. We ran and the guy took us in.
We performed our best Cirque de Soleil acts, we did everything for the ride. The man, Vladimir, was one of those great outgoing types you simply love at first sight. He was returning home to Bratislava (our dream destination) after leaving his wife and daughter in a summer resort on Balaton lake and was hurrying back with the brand new state-owned Tatra to take his boss to Prague 7:00 a.m. sharp the next morning. He said he did not have anybody at home and we, we could stay overnight. He will fry a pork-chop or a schnitzel for each and then we all must catch some sleep. He will have to leave early, at about 6:00 a.m. because his boss lived on the other side of the town. He hates to say that - but we, we will have to leave with him too. He will drop us at a place where there might be a bakery which opens at roughly about 6:30 a.m.
We could not believe our ears.
