He Said:
Yesterday in going from Meknes to Fes, it is only a 45-minute train ride, but we learned a very important lesson in that short amount of time; never buy second-class train tickets in Morocco! Unlike first-class tickets that have reserved seats, they sell an unlimited number of second-class tickets for any given train. So we spent our ride standing up in the small space next to the bathroom at the end of the car with six other people. Leave it to say we happily shelled out the extra money for first-class for the 8-hour ride to Marrakech that we are taking on Wednesday. The temperature here is pretty hot during the day, around 100 degrees, so we have been trying to avoid doing much between noon and 6:00pm. Thankfully our hotel has a pool so we were able to catch a few rays to balance out our "farmer tans". Most of the tourists we have encountered have been French couples or French families. It guess since French is spoken by most Moroccans and most costs here about 50% cheaper than Europe, it shouldn't be a big surprise so many families from Europe ferry their cars across the Straight of Gibraltar for a holiday trip.

Katie came down with a case of "travelers' tummy" which sapped a lot of her strength so our sightseeing here was a lot less ambitious than our normal pace. We still managed to see a bit of the town, but stayed out of the souk (market) for which Fes is renown. The commotion, crowds, heat and especially the smells of the souk would have been a bit too overwhelming for her. Oh well, we still have three more Moroccan cities left to experience.

She Said:
I'm quite sure that Fes is trying to kill me. Or at least the kebab I ate last night is - and it's really doing a good job!! I have spent more time lying on the bathroom floor than looking around at all the sites. I'm so glad we got our Cipro prescription filled before we left... just waiting on the effects of the antibiotic to kick in. But in the meantime, I'm going back to prepackaged processed food for a while. Thank god we switched at the last minute from the budget hotel with shared bathrooms to the European chain hotel we are staying in now!!!
