Where I stayed
Home Sweet Home
Puerto Varas is at the southern end of Chile's lake district, it is a charming lake side town, although due to the massive expanse of water you would be forgiven if you thought you were by the sea.
Across the lake from the town you should be able to see the volcano on a clear day, however, as is the problem with the southern lake district, it rained for the two days we were there, so we were unable to see this. The rain also meant we did not do much exploring of the surrounding area, which is supposed to be spectacular. Instead we spent a lot of our time at our hostel with the kind owner, who was very welcoming and like the name of the hostel suggests (hone sweet home), it felt like he had invited us into his home. He only runs a hostel during the high season and for the rest of the year he runs a school for children. On the first night several of his friends were there so we sat up for hours talking. The guys were all very easy to get along with and we felt we had made made some new friends by the time the night was over. On the second day he offered both of us jobs, Aff as a teacher of maths and Carla to teach the children about environmental issues. We were both really pleased and it is the first time in our travels where we have met anyone to suggest we should come and work in their country and that it would be easy to do and we would be very welcome.
We liked the place a lot but due to the poor weather we decided to head north to get some sunshine.

Ha! Rain? Lake District? Sounds like home. Surely you had your wellies and cagoules ready.
Now, that was a very nice gesture by the hostel owner. I bet it more than made up for the weather.
