If we all get away from the city without anyone being run over we will be lucky. This city is overrun by motorbikes. In the rush hour major juctions have traffic police on them to make sure that the traffic lights are obeyed - as at other times compliance is random. Every time you cross the road you take your life in your hands.

The other truely crazy thing is the overhead wiring - check it out in the pictures - I have no idea what they do if a wire fails - string up another one?

There is very little of the old Saigon left most buildings are from the mid seventies and they are building downtown skyscrapers on every corner.

I took a boat trip around the harbour definately educational but not really enjoyable - the shore has many squalid homes built above the water not a place I would like to live.[

A busy waterway and I was suprised to see a lone fisherman in the port - I have to say the water looked relatively clean so maybe he can still make a living.

While I was here a did some of the tourist sights but generally skipped the 'war' stuff as I know a number of Americans who were drafted and served in Vietnam it was just a bit too close to visit the museum and the tunnels.

There are relics all over the town with tanks in the front yards of many buildings. The centre of the town is ruled by scooters, there are wide pavements all over but there is nowhere to walk!. The pavements are used as parking lots and patrolled by uniform guards. Where there are no bikes someone will have set up a cafe providing street food of all kinds. You generally have to walk in the gutter and risk being run over by people trying to park bike etc. When the traffic is bad - that is most of the time the most usual way of avoiding the traffic seens to be - ride down the pavement!
