Dali is just half a day from Lijiang so we have a leisurely drive through hills and a large fertile valley intensely farmed by smallholders. The fields making a green patchwork of the valley floor. The houses have white walls and grey roof tiles and in this area are decorated with paintings above the doors and windows. I tried to get a few dots but as the roads have improved a lot we were moving too fast.

Dali is again on the Chinese tourist trail and is packed with people on days out. All the restaurants display their produce outside on the street for inspection.

As were are all starving 10 of us choose go for late lunch together and eat family style it turns out to be a 3 hour banquet - beautiful food and great company - but we really didn't get to see much of Dali as it was nearly dark by the time we emerged from lunch.

Next day we start the dash for the border, we have 1000kms to do. The roads are toll motorways so for the first time since Europe Tango has a chance to stretch her legs. We make great time the first day and take a stop ayt Kumming which has little to recommend it expect a McDonalds, a KFC and believe it or not a Walmart inclusive of canned Christmas muzac - awful. Oh yes they had Chistmas elves as well! We moved on to a bush camp close to the border so we only had a short drive in the morning to Laos.

Exiting China was very simple and organised - entry to Laos was in theory simple but it took for ever!

Oh what a difference a border makes......
