We had a bush camp on the way to Varanasi again we managed to find a roadside rest stop with a garden and toilets. The food was good and they even did a beer run for us! After 11 weeks I can put up my tent In the dark and get packed away in 15 minutes - not something I would have thought possible a couple of months ago.

At Varanasi I decided I had had enough camping and upgraded to a hotel with air-conditioning and a western bathroom. We are only here 2 nights but it is worth especially since it looked like raiin.

Up before sunrise to get down to the river. Unfortunately it was overcast so we did not get the full sunrise experience. The Ganges is wide and at this time of year high so the ghatts are well covered. At 6 in the morning the shoreline is busy with men and women taking a dip in Mother Ganga. The women go in fully dressed in saris while the men strip down to underwear. After looking at the huge sewer plants along the banks I definitely didn't even dip a toe in. A very different way of death. The funeral pyres were burning but no bodies on view. We finished off the tour with a walk through the older part of town and a visit to a Hindu Temple.

This is our last stop in India. We now head north across the Ganges plain to Nepal.
