Flag of Bermuda  ,
Wednesday, June 13, 2007

Last night at dusk we saw the usual sight of sport fishers coming in after a day on the water.  This time, we heard a ruckus and were made aware that one of them was flying the flag of the marlin and that in fact they had caught a 1000# marlin.  I didn't know who knew this, but suspected the joyous skipper had radioed the marina to prepare a photo op.

Sure enough, we see a crowd gather and a small crane put in place.  Then the 60' sport fish put along side and we witness this giant fish being lifted, its still carcass hoisted high in the air.  A big party followed and by 2300 we could hear the "lit up" revelers making noise as they took the boat out.

So ends the life of a magnificent creature.  While I don't think its worth slaying an animal for a photo op, there sure seems like a lot of people do.

Today we are up early and going to sea.  Its cool and overcast.  Much like we used to experience on the California coast.  Today's weather is fair but good to go.  I still question if we would have been as good on Monday but today is better than tomorrrow.   We are forecast for winds up to 20 kts, waves 5-7 feet with swell as high as 8 feet.  We will rig for heavy weather.  While this seems sub-optimal to me, not a seaman around would want to stay in port.  We are all ready to go.  We have done the deal in Bermuda and with 2 of our other vessels already in the Atlantic, we are all anxius to fire up the diesel.

Our plans take us up the rhumb line to Rhode Island.  It is a planned 96 hour trip at 6.7 kts.  We are still moving at the speed of the slowest vessel- Beso (New Frontier would normally cruise at 9.5 kts0.  So the original fleet of 8 boats is now 3 boats heading east to Europe and 3 boats heading west to Rhode Island.  We, New Frontier will be traveling with Beso (N40) and Summer Skis (n43).

We expect to be in Harbor by Sunday morning.  Sue and I have booked flights from Providence RI to Norfolk for Thursday 6/20 where we will join the now sleeping First Forty for the next chapter of our summer adventure.

No more reports until we are in harbor.

We cast off with a sense of satisfaction and high hopes for a safe voyage.
