By 5:30, both Sue and I are edgy, but the anchorage we had hoped for near Southport did not work. It was up a small creek and there were already two cruisers in there who that the best spots staked out. I come in and find heavy current and soundings of 6' ...
So it is now 6:30 and its going to be dark by 8. We had run 75 miles (statute) and entered the Wilmington river. We could have just dropped the hook out the channel, but it was surely going to be a rolly, bad night. We found had a whale of a flood behind us and as First Forty hits 12 mph (10kts) we decide to race up the Wilmington river heading for the small canal that re-defines the ICW north. There was to be a good anchorage about 3 miles up the canal at Carolina Beach. We are moving so fast I tell Art the mechanical parrot to hold on to his perch!
I am unhappy with the way the day had gone. Some days on the boat are no fun....this was one of them. Im tired and cranky. Sue, knowing how to improve my spirits hands me a cold beer and lays out the taco chips and salsa. This is a formula that has worked for decades. Normally we don't drink under way, but it tasted really good.
By 8pm we found a good place at Carolina Beach. Not really very pretty, but we were down and safe. I had two more beers.
