What I did
Alcatraz and San Francisco
So the day started a little rough.
After thinking we'd struggle to make it past 8pm last night (20 hours of travel will do that to you), we somehow ended up partying until 2:30am with all sorts of shenanigans going on. Highlights (that we collectively remember) include.... hmmmm... okay, Bridgy reckons he has video footage, but we'll take care of that.
Anyway, we had tickets for the 11am cruise to Alcatraz, so we made a mad scramble to BART to catch the train into the city. We made it to the pier in time to scoff a hotdog and buy a sandwich for the trip. The short boat trip was uneventful, other than the cheeky seagull that stole the last two bites of my sandwich right out of my hand.
Alcatraz was pretty cool - what we expected, but worth experiencing in reality rather than in the movies. We spent about two hours there, and then decided it was time to head back to the city for lunch and cocktails before we all succumbed to our hangovers.
Lunch at Pier 23 was our salvation - there's something about dining out in the fresh ocean air that makes you feel alive, no matter how dead you woke up feeling :)
Other stops during our day in San Francisco - the Ferry Building with all the yummy food markets, the cable car ride up California St to Top of the Mark (most amazing views of SFO and magic cocktails), dinner in Chinatown with some amazing chilli crab, and finally a nightcap in North Beach, the Italian equivalent of Chinatown before we made the trip back to Danville for a good night's sleep.
Great day to start the trip off!
