Finally...my part of the trip! (no more depressing historical sites...Anne Frank house, the Berlin Wall, Communist Prague, Nazi Concentration Camps, Hitlers Germany, etc...)
Nothing but food, wine, art, and fun in the sun!
Looong (delayed!) train ride through the Alps to Venezia!. Sat in a couchette with a Canadian politician, John, and his wife Kim. (A welcomed pleasure having coversations in English!) Arrived around 7pm, before the SLOW water bus and my lousy directions through the crazy tunnels, alleys, and canal bridges Venice is famous for...
Almost 11 pm-arrived at our hotel (which was reserved in February and we telephoned earlier that day with our arrival time) tired, hungry, hot & sweaty__ only to discover that they did not HOLD our reservation ('they TAKE but they don't HOLD the reservation'...sorry, Seinfeld' reference).
We had NO ROOM on a hot, summer Saturday night in Venice!!!???
Long story short, we stayed at another place...a 'friend' of the other hotelier (great?!) then quickly left the next morning after finding a WONDERFUL place (Villa Igea) for our last day/night on the island.
.
view from our window!
Wandered the city on foot the entire next day...there is something refreshing about a city with NO cars, buses, subways, trains, bikes, scooters, etc...

San Marco...

Rialto Bridge...(famous marble bridge that spans the Grand Canal and has shops on top)

(ok, I lied...wandered a little_ sat at a cafe on the Grand Canal and drank a bottle of Pinot Grigio mostly!)

Out for our last evening in Venice..

(an 'American Greeting' to San Marco!)
...one of our hotel's terraces

Dinner outside on the Grand Canal, at a restaurant in San Zaccaria...
had an incredible piece of fish prepared 'just for you' (us), and our 2nd bottle of wine for the day!

Off to Firenze in the morning...
